Donation to Nawa Vision Care

Sharon and Saskia had the privilege of meeting Umutoni and Simon (the founders of NAWA Vision Care) on 5 December, on behalf of Tramedico, to share that Tramedico is making a financial donation to their foundation.

As the photos show, they could hardly have been happier. For Sharon and Saskia, it was a truly goosebump moment.

In February 2026, Umutoni and Simon will travel to Zambia again to support local eye care. Once it is clear exactly how the donation will be used, we will share an update here.

Umutoni shares the story of NAWA Vision Care, the foundation she co-founded with Simon five years ago:

“We are both former refugees from Rwanda and Congo. Here, we have been able to develop ourselves and we lead a comfortable life with our three children. That is why it was time to give something back to the region where we were born. Access to medical eye care in Africa is not available to everyone, even though eye problems can have major consequences. Imagine a parent going blind due to cataracts—often a child will then start caring for that parent. Frequently, it is a girl, who as a result cannot go to school. A cataract operation makes an enormous difference. Or something as simple as reading glasses for someone who earns a living through sewing work.”

NAWA Vision Care works with Lusaka Eye Hospital in remote areas of Zambia. They conduct eye examinations and cataract surgeries, and ensure that complex cases are referred to Lusaka for treatment. Glasses are fitted on site, fitted with lenses here, and then sent back to Zambia.
