Study Journey to Nepal

Visit to the Eye Care Foundation and the Himalaya Eye Hospital (HEH)
A key highlight of our journey was visiting the various hospitals and eye care facilities of the Himalaya Eye Hospital (HEH), established 30 years ago by a group of Dutch ophthalmologists. Today, this hospital has grown into the largest eye hospital in Nepal—an impressive institution that cares for approximately 600 patients daily with a dedicated team of 132 staff members, ranging from gardeners to ophthalmic specialists.

High-Quality Eye Care with Local Impact
In Nepal, millions of people cannot afford eye care, leading to vision impairment or blindness for many. The Eye Care Foundation partners with the HEH and other local organizations to make affordable eye care accessible, particularly for the most vulnerable groups. We witnessed the profound impact of this work—one surgery can literally transform a patient’s life.
Beyond providing medical care, the hospital also offers practical training programs, empowering more Nepalese people with the skills to contribute to eye care in their communities. This approach ensures the sustainable growth of healthcare services in the country.

Immersing Ourselves in Nepalese Culture
In addition to our visits to hospitals and medical facilities, we had the opportunity to explore the rich culture and landscapes of Nepal. One of the first things we noticed was the harmonious coexistence of Hinduism and Buddhism. Religion is deeply woven into everyday life, with vibrant temples and rituals adding color and meaning to the streets.
In the bustling cities, the air buzzes with the sounds of market vendors, honking cars, and animated conversations. Dusty roads, chaotic traffic, and the distinctive scents of incense and spices combine to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. It’s an experience that can only truly be felt in Nepal—a sensory journey we won’t soon forget.

Our Experience and Future Collaboration
Despite the bustling and hectic environment, there seems to be a unique harmony where people, animals, and vehicles coexist in an intricate balance. What often appeared chaotic to us reflects the remarkable ability of the Nepalese to find equilibrium in a dynamic and sometimes demanding setting.
This journey left a profound impression on us. It was not only an introduction to the incredible work of the Eye Care Foundation but also an eye-opening experience into the challenges and resilience of Nepalese society. We have immense respect for the collaboration between the Himalaya Eye Hospital and the Eye Care Foundation, which is transforming lives and securing the future of eye care in Nepal.
As a team, we feel deeply inspired to continue supporting these efforts—both practically and financially—and to contribute to the further expansion of eye care in Nepal. We are grateful for the opportunity to witness this work firsthand and look forward to future opportunities to play a part in this important mission.
